Yunnan Province locates in the far southwest of the People's Republic of China. It spans approximately 394,000 suqare kilometers and borders Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. Yunnan Province, due to its beautiful landscapes, mild climate and colorful ethnic minorities, is one of China's major tourist destinations.
The name “Yunnan” could be understood as “south of colorful clouds” in Chinese. Since it offers a diversity of both people and landscapes, it becomes a dream destination for travellers.
It is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. There's the hughly varied splendour of the land – triple-thick jungle sliced by the Mekong River in the south, soul-recharging glimpses of the sun over rice terraces in the central and southeastern regions, and the towering, snow-capped mountains as you edge towards Tibet. You can sweat in the tropics and freeze in the Himalayas in one week. It is also rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China.
Also, the culture in Yunnan is definately colorful. More than half of China's ethnic minority groups reside here, providing an extraordinary glimpse into China's mixed salad of humanity. You can enjoy the Water-Sprinkling Festival of Dai's and the Torch Festival of Yi's, not mention to the beautiful songs, hot dances and gorgeous costumes of all the minorities. If you have time to visit only one province in China, then it should be Yunnan.
